Winners overcome the shame of an industry segment.

We all need a pillow for our heads whether traveling or staying at home. So, who provides the smarter processes and clean bed linens, especially for a niche segment of the hospitality industry?

And for house cleaners too.

Domestic housekeepers face issues with feelings of shame for being in an industry that people don’t want to associate with, while also dealing with the misconception that the work is transient.

Three bronze winners of the FedEx 2019 Small Business Grants Competition learned to look for new solutions from personal experience, while running a small Airbnb on the side of their aircraft jobs. “We learned from cleaning ourselves that the work is incredibly technical and requires a certain cadence and level of repetition for it to be done well. Good cleaners possess a unique skill, and they deserve to be valued in this way. One of the things that we wanted to do with Neu (their disruptive cleaning services company) was make cleaning “sexy,” the same way that Uber turned driving into a sexy career.”

After learning about shared difficulties and cost burdens related to cleaning in the Airbnb host community, Kwame Boler, Rilwan Lawal, and Claudius Mbemba set out to introduce technology to bring cleaning into the 21st century and alleviate some of the industry’s biggest pain points.

Their company, Neu, Inc., streamlines hotel cleanings for Airbnb hosts and provides a turnkey experience by supplying sheets, towels, and toiletries and scheduling cleanings between guest stays. With two customer segments — vacation rental hosts and domestic cleaners — Neu operates in the flexible gig economy as a residential cleaning business.

The bonus; the company is the 2019 FedEx Small Business Grant Contest Bronze Prize Winner.
